Key Setting Differences

Post by Xenia »

People may be coming into this game with a lot of preconceived notions about how the setting works. We wanted to post this up as soon as possible to ensure we were able to do away with any preconceived notions that might not be accurate.

Mortal
- Greece does not function on chattel slavery, and instead operates on something much closer to serfdom. It's definitely a lower class that does all the manual labor, but it's a class divide instead of forced imprisonment. We will not be exploring the theme of slavery in this game.
- Sexism and homophobia are also not themes we intend to explore in this game; in our take on Ancient Greece, all genders were regarded equally, and it's already pretty true to history that variations of sexual preference were A-OK.
- The paiderastia, or Greek dynamic between an older male (erastês) and a younger boy (erômenos), is mentorship in the modern sense, defined neither by gender nor sexual practices. In this form of mentorship, older erastês (20+ years old) take on younger erômenos (13-20, or older in rare cases) to guide them into becoming a truly gifted Greek Citizen. The only requirements for this dynamic is that one must be younger, one must be older, and they must both be deeply invested in a teacher/student dynamic to improve the life of the erômenos. This is a relationship much more familial than anything else. We wish to reemphasize that gender and sex are not factors at all of the erastês/erômenos mentorship in our setting.
- The Pantheon is not guaranteed to be the one represented in classical literature. Many of the gods have different pronouns and relationship preferences than you may expect.
- Not a deviation, but of note: Athenian currency is silver, which is distinctly uncomfortable and covered under Resources.
- Player actions may deviate the course of history, particularly in the case of the Peloponnesian War.

Supernatural
- We will not be using the term 'Metis'; the breed born of two garou is called "Ostraka".
- The mistreatment or literal ownership of Kinfolk has never been sanctioned or accepted. All tribes respect the necessity and importance of their kin, and while more traditional tribes shelter their kin from the cruel world and keep them close to the family, under no circumstances do entire tribes or septs of garou emotionally or physically abuse kinfolk.
- Kinfolk are unable to join packs in the universal setting, which is consistent with canon. However, in Greece, there has been a local phenomenon of Totems accepting kinfolk, even if they don't have Gnosis. This should be noted as unusual.
- Kinfolk universally also do not possess Gnosis; our PC kinfolk do, which is intended to reflect PC glow. Still, you should be regarded and treated as exceptional for possessing this gift. Universally, the vast majority of Kinfolk do not have Gnosis.
- White Wolf canon has some weirdly random assignments of historical and mythological figures as certain supernatural splat types. Please do not accept these as canon.
- Similarly, supernaturals in this game may (and probably will) function differently than you expect. Fae are far from anything resembling the modern day, mages are more sorcerers than anything else, and vampires... well at this point in history, you can count their Generation on one hand. Expect the unexpected.

Tribal
- While the Black Furies are a heavily matriarchal society, they have not yet excluded men from the tribe, and accept members of all genders. Further, their tribal totem is Artemis, and Pegasus has not yet taken over the tribe.
- The modern-day Fianna are obsessively clannish and superstitious at this time: the locals are called "Night Claws", and the term "Fianna" is not in use. More information is available to Night Claw players.
- The modern-day Get of Fenris are not yet known as such, going by the name "Get of the Winter Wolf" and much more closely tied with the modern Wendigo (Winter's Sky in this setting).
- The modern-day Glass Walkers are presently known as the "Warders of Man".
- Silent Striders didn't lose Egypt, and in fact won! The tale is here.
- Silver Fangs do not have Noble Houses, but instead Noble Clans, as 'houses' were not yet an aristocratic concept.
- Stargazers have a much stronger local attachment in the game, and we will be exploring how the Tibetan tribe gained its close association with Chimera, a Greek bygone.
- Croatan/Wendigo/Uktena are not known by PCs with few exceptions. Eurasian Garou have not been able to connect with North American tribes since the Concord; historians know of tribes in a distant land named Dusk Keepers, Winter's Sky (rumored to be the same tribe as the Get of Winter Wolf) and Mound Speakers, but not much past that.
